“Yes, Lord,” she replied, “but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” (Matthew 15:27)
True humility is clearly shown here through this Canaanite woman. She had a great need in her life. She went to look for help, but she didn’t do so with a sense of entitlement, and she didn’t assume any merit. “Yes, I don’t deserve your attention. I know I am not a Jew and I am not your priority. But even the dogs eat crumbs that fall from their master’s table. Can you not spare me some, Jesus?”
Jesus wasn’t on an ego trip. The Master was simply going about His business. For the Canaanite woman, she knew who she was, a Gentile, and she did not let that stop her from crossing the line to get help from Jesus. Her determination and her willingness to risk rejection culminated in a story so compelling that Matthew had to include in his writing.
I have something to learn here. Sometimes my fear of rejection limited my ability to reach out and influence others. Yet, I have tasted sweet victory when I did not allow insecurity to play a trick in my mind. Do my part to sow seeds, and trust the Lord to do the work of touching lives. Meanwhile, I will happily busy myself with my greater priorities of building an awesome marriage, raising my three children, and keeping a healthy and loving home. Crops will grow and I will wait for the harvest.
